Getting your bike licence is a big deal.

Here at braaap we specialise in helping new people get into our sport. Below is our list of 7 things you have to do before you get your license.

1. Learn to ride

Learning to ride on the dirt is a good way of developing your skills, if you're not close to the local braaap dealership where braaap owners get free lessons then we suggest you talk to your local riding school and book a pre-learners course.

2. Decide what type of riding you want to do

Get excited about motorcycling and write your bucket list of rides, this will be important when choosing your bike.

3. Decide where you will ride most

Are you commuting, weekend warrior riding, adventure riding, cafe to cafe racing or what? Again this will determine what type of bike you buy and what training you should get.

4. Book your licence test / course

Choose a licenced provider that actually cares, your best bet is to call us on 1300 27 22 27 or your local braaap dealer and we can point you in the right direction.

5. Choose your safety gear

I think this is one of the most enjoyable parts of riding, choosing your gear and getting all your kit ready for the ride. The internet will not cut it on this, I think you should come in-store and get fitted or at least call us to discuss and make sure you have relevant and genuine advice.

6. Practice in a safe and controlled environment

Yes, you may know how to ride but I can't urge you strongly enough to go and ride in a car park or a paddock and get confident with the bike, once you hit the road you want to be focused on other riders and drivers, not yourself.

7. Take the test

You will more than likely pass if you can ride and you want to follow the rules it is likely to be a good and straightforward day. The piece of paper to licence you does not have any reflection in my opinion of how safe of a rider you will be in the real world so please take it easy, ride with awareness and keep practising even though you now have your ticket.

The most important thing to remember is that as motorcyclist's we are responsible for our own actions. Motorcycling is a safe and fun sport, it is a safe and economical mode of transport and it is the ultimate freedom but it can be the exact opposite if you treat the road like a race track, if you ride "asleep at the wheel" and if you expect other drivers/riders to be aware.

so my final point is

8. Racing is for the race track.

I am a huge fan of getting on a motorcycle and going for it, the ultimate buzz is ripping around the race track as close to the edge as humanly possible. I'm writing this to say that if you have the urge to race, or you want to test your limits, go to your local race track, google when the next "ride day" or "club day" is and go have some fun in a safe and controlled environment.
